Aruba is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Our national laws are to a large extent similar and at times identical to Dutch Law. However, Island regulations may differ substantially.

Aruba has its own Court in First Instance that handles civel, administrative and criminal cases. Decisions from the Court in First Instance can be appealed at the joint court of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The joint court of the Netherlands Antilles will fully review the facts and the legal arguments of the parties envolved. This appellate court has its primary seat on the Island of Curacao, but the judges of the appellate court travel throughout the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba on a regular basis to handle appeal cases. Further appeals are handled by the highest court of the Kingdom, being the Supreme court of the Netherlands (Hoge Raad der Nederlanden), located in the Hague, Holland. This court does not review the cats, but merely decides on the application of the law. It’s function is comparable to the US Supreme Court.
